What we know about Diplodocus

Diplodocus lived in western North America during the late Jurassic, roughly 154 to 152 million years ago. It was a sauropod with a long neck, a very long tail, a small head, and peg-like teeth at the front of its jaws. Some species reached about 24 to 27 meters long, with much of that length coming from the tail and neck.

  • Its fossils are part of the Morrison Formation in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and nearby regions.
  • The tail may have acted as a balance and could have been moved quickly, although its exact use remains debated.
  • Diplodocus lived tens of millions of years before humans.

Coloring and printing tips

  • Print at 100% on US Letter; choose fit to page or shrink to fit for A4.
  • Crayons work well across the long body, while colored pencils help define river ripples and palm leaves.
  • Use 65-90 lb paper or 90-160 gsm. Cardstock is best for markers.
  • Use layered greens for the plants and a contrasting color along the long tail.
