A cupcake with a swirl worth coloring. The PDF is ready to print at home.
A tall cupcake fills the page in a pleated liner, with a thick swirl of frosting piled high and a tiny ghost pushed into the top. The swirl turns in soft ridges, which gives crayons plenty to follow, and the ghost is small enough to finish in a few strokes. The space around it stays blank so a child can add a plate, a napkin, or a scatter of sprinkles. This page suits ages four and up. Crayons and colored pencils handle the large shapes well, and markers look good in the liner pleats when you print on cardstock.
Why that swirl holds its shape
Frosting that stands up in a tall spiral has been mixed stiff enough to hold a peak. Bakers stop adding liquid once the beaters leave a firm point behind, because a soft frosting slides off the cake within an hour.
Coloring each ridge in a slightly different shade of the same color makes the swirl read as round. Four shades are plenty. With only one color, leave a thin white line along each ridge and the curl still shows.
Coloring and printing tips
- Print at 100% scale, black and white. A4 works with "fit to page" selected.
- Copy paper (20 lb / 80 gsm) for crayons and pencils, cardstock (65 lb / 160 gsm) for markers.
- The ghost on top is the smallest area. A sharp colored pencil keeps it from turning into a blob.
- Try a warm color for the liner and a cool one for the frosting, then leave the swirl ridges white for shine.
