Dinosaur Footprints Coloring Page

Grid of dinosaur footprints and fossil tracks with a small walking dinosaur, free printable coloring page

This free dinosaur footprints coloring page is part pattern page and part fossil-track scene. Print the PDF and turn each outlined track into its own small design.

What fossil footprints show

Fossil footprints are called trace fossils because they record an animal's activity rather than its bones. Trackways can show the direction an animal traveled, the spacing of steps, and sometimes clues about speed or group movement. They do not always identify a single species with certainty.

  • Three-toed tracks are common among meat-eating theropods, but track shape alone is not a perfect label.
  • Broad, rounded tracks may come from plant-eating dinosaurs, depending on the track and rock layer.
  • Tracks form when soft sediment preserves an impression and later hardens or is buried.

Coloring and printing tips

  • Print at 100% on US Letter; choose fit to page or shrink to fit for A4.
  • Colored pencils are useful for small track patterns, while crayons make a bold repeating design.
  • Use 65-90 lb paper or 90-160 gsm. Cardstock suits markers.
  • Try alternating colors across the grid, then use one strong color for the walking dinosaur.
