A cat on a pumpkin, tail and all. Print the PDF for a fall afternoon or a classroom table.
A black cat sits on top of a large pumpkin, front paws together, tail curling down over the side of the shell. The pumpkin is wide and ribbed and the cat's outline stays simple, so the shape reads clearly before any color goes on. This page suits a wide age range. A younger child can fill the pumpkin orange and stop there. An older child can keep the cat mostly black and pull the fur out along the back with a gray pencil.
A cat, a pumpkin, and a bit of folklore
Ask ten people what a black cat means and you will get ten answers. In parts of Britain, one arriving at the door is counted as good luck. In the United States the same animal became a Halloween figure. Folklore travels and changes, and none of it alters the cat sitting on this page. One practical note: solid black fur can swallow the tail where it meets the pumpkin. Leave a thin white rim along the outline, or use dark gray, and the shape stays readable.
Coloring and printing tips
- Print at 100% scale, black and white, on US Letter. On A4, choose "fit to page".
- Shade the pumpkin first and the cat last, so a dark pencil does not smear the orange.
- For the cat, layer two grays before reaching for black. The fur stays visible that way.
- Cardstock (65 lb / 160 gsm) is the safer choice if markers are on the table.
- Try a porch step and a moon behind the pumpkin. Two shapes turn it into a scene.
More to print tonight: the candy corn page is the quickest one here, and the graveyard scene has a bat and a moon. Everything else is in the Halloween collection.
